Avios calculator
Use Reward Flights UK calculators to estimate Avios redemption value from cash fares, points prices, and fees.

An Avios calculator is a tool that does one job: it takes the numbers from a potential reward booking — the cash fare, the Avios price, and the taxes and fees — and produces a pence-per-point figure you can act on. It strips away the vagueness around "are these points worth using?" and replaces it with a concrete number. This guide explains exactly how to run that calculation yourself, what inputs to gather across British Airways, Iberia Plus, and Qatar Privilege Club, and how to interpret the result before pressing confirm.
How an Avios value calculator works
At its core, an Avios calculator applies a single formula to your booking data:
> Avios value (p) = (Cash fare − Reward booking fees) ÷ Avios required × 100
The output tells you how many pence of value each Avios is generating in that specific booking. Feed in different routes, cabins, or programmes, and you can compare results side by side to identify where your Avios stretch furthest.
Gathering the right inputs before you calculate
Rushing this step is where most self-calculations go wrong. For each booking you're evaluating, you need:
Cash fare: Search the identical route, cabin, and date on the airline's direct booking site. Note the *full* cash price including all taxes — not a stripped-down base fare.
Avios price: Log into the relevant programme (BA Executive Club, Iberia Plus, or Qatar Privilege Club) and search the same route and dates as an award booking. Record the points required per person.
Fees and taxes on the award: Click through to the payment page to see the complete charge. This is critical — BA in particular applies carrier-imposed surcharges on top of government taxes that significantly change the calculation. Don't use the estimate shown in search results; get the checkout total.
Cabin class: Note whether you're comparing economy, premium economy (where available), business, or first class. The ratio of cash fares to Avios costs varies dramatically between cabins.
How BA's distance-based Avios pricing works
British Airways prices reward flights based on the distance of the flight in miles, using a banded structure. Shorter flights cost fewer Avios, longer flights cost more — but the bands are broad, so two routes of quite different lengths can cost the same Avios price.
There are off-peak and peak pricing tiers on many routes, with off-peak typically around 25–30% cheaper in Avios. The off-peak calendar is published by BA and is worth bookmarking — flying in off-peak periods is one of the highest-leverage tactics available to Avios collectors.
Iberia Plus and Qatar Privilege Club: same Avios, different fee arithmetic
Iberia Plus and Qatar Privilege Club both use Avios as their currency, but each programme has its own fee structure and award pricing. This means an identical Avios balance can deliver a meaningfully different value depending on which programme you book through.
Iberia Plus is frequently the lowest-fee option for long-haul routes — particularly to Latin America. Its award pricing on business class between Europe and South America is lower in both Avios and fees than the equivalent BA booking on the same Oneworld metal.
Qatar Privilege Club offers access to Qsuites — Qatar Airways' award-winning business class product — for Avios. Fees are generally more modest than BA, and the product quality in business class is exceptional. For certain long-haul routes through Doha, Qatar can be the most efficient use of Avios available.
Example calculations by route type
| Route | Programme | Cabin | Cash fare | Avios | Fees | Value per Avios |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LHR–MAD return | BA | Economy | £160 | 18,000 | £55 | 0.6p |
| LHR–AMS return | BA | Business | £320 | 9,000 | £80 | 2.7p |
| LHR–CAI return (Egypt) | BA | Economy | £460 | 30,000 | £110 | 1.2p |
| LHR–JFK return | BA | Club World | £4,400 | 160,000 | £680 | 2.3p |
| MAD–GRU return | Iberia Plus | Business | £3,200 | 68,000 | £180 | 4.4p |
| DOH–SIN return | Qatar PC | Qsuites | £3,800 | 70,000 | £220 | 5.1p |
The table shows the significant spread in achievable value — from 0.6p for a short-haul European economy booking to over 5p for a Qsuites redemption through Qatar Privilege Club.
Worked step-by-step calculation: LHR to New York in Club World
Here's how to run the calculation yourself for a BA long-haul business class redemption:
1. Find the cash fare: BA.com shows LHR–JFK return in Club World at £4,400 on your target dates.
2. Find the Avios price: The same booking via BA Executive Club costs 160,000 Avios return (off-peak).
3. Get the full fee total: Clicking through to payment shows £680 in taxes and carrier charges.
4. Subtract fees from cash fare: £4,400 − £680 = £3,720 (the net saving your Avios generate)
5. Divide by Avios used: £3,720 ÷ 160,000 = £0.02325
6. Multiply by 100 for pence: 2.33p per Avios
A value of 2.33p is solidly above the 1.5p benchmark that typically signals a worthwhile redemption. For context, the same 160,000 Avios redeemed across 17 or 18 short-haul European economy returns might yield only 0.6p each — a radically less efficient use of the same points.
Using the result to make a booking decision
Once you have your pence-per-Avios figure, the decision framework is straightforward:
- Under 1.0p: Difficult to justify unless you have surplus points approaching expiry or no better use on the horizon. Consider paying cash.
- 1.0p – 1.5p: Acceptable, particularly for mid-haul routes where cash fares are moderate. Not exciting, but not wasteful.
- 1.5p – 2.5p: Good. A solid redemption that's making reasonable use of your Avios balance.
- Above 2.5p: Excellent. This is the territory where Avios — particularly through Iberia Plus or Qatar Privilege Club — can genuinely transform travel access.
Always run the calculation on the actual dates you intend to travel, as cash fare levels and award availability can shift significantly between seasons.
