Amex points to Avios guide
How to think about transferring UK American Express Membership Rewards points into Avios before booking reward flights.

What the 1:1 transfer ratio actually means
Transferring UK American Express Membership Rewards to Avios is a 1:1 process: every 1,000 Membership Rewards points becomes 1,000 Avios in your British Airways Executive Club account. There's no conversion penalty, no minimum transfer threshold beyond Amex's own rules, and the points typically appear in your Avios account within a few hours to a couple of days.
That clean ratio is appealing, but it can also create a false sense of equivalence. One Amex point is only as valuable as the Avios redemption you have in mind — and as we'll explore below, that depends heavily on which airline you book, which route you choose, and whether BA's carrier charges eat into the saving.
The Avios ecosystem: more than just British Airways
A key advantage of transferring to Avios — rather than, say, a single-airline programme like Flying Club — is that you can redeem across a surprisingly wide partner network. Avios is now the shared currency of the IAG group and several affiliate carriers:
- British Airways — the most obvious choice for UK travellers, covering global routes from Heathrow and Gatwick
- Iberia — useful for transatlantic routes departing from Madrid, and for booking BA-operated transatlantic flights with lower surcharges via Iberia Plus
- Qatar Airways — bookable using Avios with lower surcharges than equivalent BA bookings, including Qsuite in Business
- Vueling — short-haul European coverage if you're travelling via Barcelona or Madrid
- Finnair — Nordic connections and access to oneworld long-haul routes via Helsinki
The practical consequence: when you transfer Membership Rewards to Avios, you're not just buying access to British Airways. You're buying access to an ecosystem of carriers, each with different fee structures and availability patterns. Understanding which carrier suits your route can dramatically improve what you get from the same Avios balance.
The BA carrier charges problem — and how Iberia Plus can help
The most important consideration when deciding whether to transfer Amex points to Avios is British Airways' carrier charges on long-haul routes. On BA-operated flights departing from the UK, carrier surcharges can add:
- Economy return (long-haul): £300–£500 per person
- Business class return (long-haul): £500–£700 per person
These charges do not disappear when you pay with Avios — you pay them on top of the Avios redemption price. On a route where the cash fare is only £800 and the Avios booking still requires £500 in fees, the effective saving is just £300, which may represent poor value relative to the Avios cost.
The workaround many experienced travellers use is booking via Iberia Plus rather than BA Executive Club. Iberia and BA share Avios but apply different fee structures. On certain transatlantic routes, booking via Iberia Plus can reduce the surcharge burden significantly — sometimes by several hundred pounds per person. This requires registering for an Iberia Plus account and transferring your Amex points there instead of (or in addition to) your BA account.
Pros and cons of transferring to Avios
| Factor | Pro | Con |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer ratio | Clean 1:1, no value lost in conversion | None |
| Programme breadth | Redeem on BA, Iberia, Qatar, Vueling, Finnair | Narrower than a hotel programme |
| Short-haul value | Strong for European hops on BA or Iberia | Points cost per mile can be steep on short routes |
| Long-haul value | Excellent via Qatar or Iberia Plus bookings | BA carrier charges can erode value significantly |
| Transfer speed | Usually instant to same-day | Transfer is one-way and irreversible |
| Flexibility | Avios don't expire while you're active | Once transferred, can't move to Virgin Points |
Transfer process: how it works in practice
To transfer Membership Rewards to Avios:
1. Log into your American Express UK account online or via the app
2. Navigate to the Membership Rewards section and select "Transfer points"
3. Choose British Airways Executive Club as the destination
4. Enter your Executive Club membership number and the number of points to transfer
5. Confirm — the transfer is irreversible once submitted
Transfers are typically credited to your Avios account within 24–48 hours, though many members report same-day or instant transfers during business hours. Always verify the Avios balance in your Executive Club account before making a booking.
Should you transfer to Avios or hold in Membership Rewards?
The decision to transfer should be driven by one thing: a specific, confirmed reward availability at a price that makes the transfer worthwhile. Here's a structured way to think about it:
Transfer to Avios when:
- You have confirmed reward space on a specific flight
- The Avios price plus fees represents a clear saving over the cash fare
- You're booking via Qatar or Iberia Plus where fees are lower
- You're using a companion voucher that effectively doubles the value of your Avios
Hold in Membership Rewards when:
- You don't yet have a confirmed reward seat
- You're still weighing up Avios vs Virgin Points for your trip
- The cash fare differential is small or uncertain
- Your travel plans aren't fixed
Worked example: Is this Avios transfer worth it?
Scenario: London Heathrow to Tokyo Haneda in Club World (Business), two weeks out.
- Cash fare: £3,800 return
- Avios price (via BA): 100,000 Avios + £600 in carrier charges and taxes
- Net saving vs cash: £3,800 − £600 = £3,200 saved
- Effective value per Avios: £3,200 ÷ 100,000 = 3.2p per Avios
In this scenario, transferring 100,000 Membership Rewards to Avios delivers very strong value — well above most benchmark thresholds for a worthwhile redemption.
Now run the same trip with a lower cash fare:
- Cash fare (off-peak): £1,600 return
- Avios price: 100,000 Avios + £600 in carrier charges
- Net saving vs cash: £1,600 − £600 = £1,000 saved
- Effective value per Avios: £1,000 ÷ 100,000 = 1.0p per Avios
Still positive, but considerably less compelling. You're now comparing 1.0p per point against the theoretical value of keeping those points flexible in your Membership Rewards account. If there's a chance Virgin Points or another route could deliver 1.8p+ per point, holding may be the better move.
Use the points value calculator to run these numbers with your actual route figures before committing to any transfer.
